R.F. Supa: Press Pause is the New Black
TAIS's Graffiti Artist Project (World Premiere)
Early in 2005, The Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) commissioned and facilitated the creation of new animated works by the Press Pause Collective (Lease, Elicser, Homesick, Iah, Fathom and Ferris). The artists were instructed in the craft of animation and encouraged to translate their skills in illustration, design, urban art, new media, music, and sculpture. Collectively, Press Pause has created a series of animations, which present their own radical notions of urban beautification.
R.F. Supa: Press Pause is the New Black is a story which follows the main character R.F. Supa and the greyscale environment in which he resides, a visual series of events leading up to the day it was all changed for the "better". It is a metaphor for the day the "Graffiti Eradication Task Force" gets its way, and how the city might feel with no colour. Included with the World premieres is a special presentation of Style Wars, Tony Silver's 1983 chronicle of teenage graffiti artists in New York who fought Ed Koch and turned tags into art.
